Boston Arms 2009 - Report Low Budget 30th Anniversary The earlier than usual date due to availability of the band did not seem to make any difference to the interest in our annual event, and tickets sold as well as usual with a full house on the day. Live music kicked of with a great set from Pete Watkins. Playing mainly Face to Face era album tracks, Pete and friends were well received and are greatly appreciated for their enthusiasm. Prior to Kast Off Kinks taking the stage Bill introduced Dave Emlen so that everyone could put a face to the man behind the most important Kinks web site for general information. At this point, Ray Davies turned up to witness the start of the Kast of Kinks set, with Mick, Jim Ian and Dave Clarke on stage. Ray was quick to take the stage and take lead vocals for the 30th anniversary performance of 'Low Budget', and as the band continued with 'Victoria' he hung around side stage and in the dressing room below to take in the set and the vibe. Bill Orton had taken his Fender Strat Plus guitar (similar to Ray's own stage guitar) just in case Ray did show, and with a little gentle persuasion, Ray rejoined the band (now with Debi) on guitar and vocals for 'The Hard Way', 'Somebody Stole My Car', 'Till The End of The Day' and 'You Really Got Me'. Understandably, everyone loved it. Ray retired to a safe distance to enjoy the rest of the band's first set. Following the raffle and auction, Kast Off Kinks returned to the stage for a couple of numbers and with Mick on vocals for 'Dedicated Follower of Fashion', Bob Henrit took over the drum kit, and stayed on for 'Lola', following which the band formed a seventies line up with John Dalton on Bass and Baptist on keyboards for a great version of 'God's Children'. Nobby invited Ray to return and sing 'Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues' and Baptist took lead vocal on 'Milk Cow Blues'. The core band then resumed for the finalé which included Ray again on vocals for'Waterloo Sunset' and 'All Day and All of the Night'. Kast off Kinks ended the set with 'Next in Line' and 'So Tired of Waiting' All of the band, including Ray Davies, really enjoyed it, and everyone said that it was the best fan club event ever! Can we top it next year? Watch this space.
